Cuzco

The ancient capital
of the Inca empire, Cuzco, is reached from
Puno by train following a spectacular route across the Altiplano
where only llamas seem to live. Cuzco appears in its green
valley as "the navel of the world", as the Incas once believed
it
was. The magnificient stone palaces and temples that so
impressed the Spaniards form the foundations of the colonial
city that we see today. The baroque church, Koricancha, sits atop
the remains of the Inca's Temple of the Sun, and the surrounding
hills are the site of many Inca fortresses such as the impressive
Sacsayhuaman and Tambo Machay, overlooking Cuzco.
